What We Believe

Faith & Covenant
(as stated in Article IV of our Church Bylaws)

A. Faith:
  1. This church recognizes the Bible as the sufficient rule of faith and practice, and holds that living in accordance with the teachings of Jesus Christ is the true test of fellowship
  2. Each member shall have the undisturbed right to follow the Word of God according to the dictates of conscience, under the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit.
  3. One expression of this faith is the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ.
B.   Covenant:
  1. We covenant one with another to seek and respond to the Word and the will of God
  2. We purpose to walk together in the ways of the Lord, made known and to be made known to us
  3. We hold it to be in the mission of the church to witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ in all the world, while worshiping God, and striving for truth, justice and peace.
  4. As did our forebears, we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead and empower us.
  5. We pray for the coming of the kingdom of God, and we look with faith toward the triumph of righteousness and eternal life.

United Church of Christ Statement of Faith
(This Statement of Faith was originally written and adopted in 1959 shortly after the UCC was formed.  The language was revised in 1981.  Below is a combination of the two – using the doxology format of 1981 while maintaining the original 1959 language of “Father”, “Kingdom” and “Lord”)

We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit, Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ and our God, and to your deeds we testify:
You call the worlds into being, create persons in your own image,
and set before each one the ways of life and death.
You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness and sin.
You judge people and nations by your righteous will
      declared through prophets and apostles.
In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and risen
Savior, you have come to us and shared our common lot,
conquering sin and death and reconciling the world to yourself.
You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the
church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.
You call us into your church to accept the cost and joy of
discipleship, to be your servants in the service of others, to proclaim the gospel to all the world and resist the powers of evil, to share in Christ’s baptism and eat at his table, to join him in his passion and victory.
You promise to all who trust you forgiveness of sins and
fullness of grace, courage in the struggle for justice and peace,
your presence in trial and rejoicing, and eternal life in your kingdom which has no end.
Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you.  Amen.

The Apostles Creed
(The Apostles Creed is one of the oldest known Christian statements of faith and the most universally accepted and commonly read creed in the Christian church.  Our church upholds and often reads in worship these historic creeds as well.)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.  The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
